Day Uno

Wow! Seems like forever ago. Sorry it took us so long.  Turns out there is less service and wifi than we anticipated.  Also we're tired and go to bed before 10...

On the morning of day 1 we woke up around 6 AM and, after a sad goodbye with Chris and Joanne, hit the road.
We had a 9 hour drive to the Badlands but managed to arrive by 3 pm with the help of the time change.

We weren't expecting anything mind blowing from South Dakota but now, looking back, neither of us are sure why. The craggy sandy peaks of Badland National park were unlike anything we'd seen before.  We parked the car and did a few short hikes to explore the area. On our way out of the park we had our first big wildlife sighting: big horn sheep! We learned later that the rings- or sections- in their horns indicate how old they are. It was also an amazing sunset.

That night we got into camp just as it was getting dark in Wall, SD. We set up camp, cooked dinner and headed to bed. It was an unbelievable first day.
