From the KOA we hopped back on the highway and made it all the way to Cody, WY by 11AM as planned. Our drive to get there was along gorgeous winding roads through Big Horn national forest. There were Cowboys rangling cattle along wide rolling hills and massive red bluffs in the distance. We arrived in Cody and sat outside a cafe with coffee eagerly awaiting the arrival of the elusive Talpini AKA Peter Talpey. We had an excited greeting when he arrived and we headed to his favorite lunch spot in town to fill up before heading to the ranch.
The drive to the ranch was equally as amazing and we stopped at a lookout along the way for Talps to teach us about the mountain ranges and peaks we were looking at. He knows an impressive amount about the area.
Once we arrived at the ranch we got a tour from Talpey seeing everything from the kitchen and staff room to guest cabins and animal pens. We saw the shop, Talpeys room, and a beautiful creek where there is apparently great fly fishing. It is a really awesome and beautiful ranch and it was great to finally see the place we've heard so much about from Talpey.
Next, Talpey took us on a hike from the ranch to a peak he called The Terrace. We gained 1300 feet of elevation in about an hour while wondering if the neighboring thunderstorms would hit us or pass by. It was worth it. The view from the top was spectacular.
After the hike we had a tasty dinner of left over jambalaya in the staff room and then spent our evening drinking Coors, playing darts and watching Jurassic Park with Talpeys cabinmates, Auggie and Chris. Around 1130 we retired to our sheep wagon. This is exactly what it sounds like. A cozy little wagon made comfortable with a mattress and shelves. We stayed in the very one that Talpey lived in the past two summers. What a wonderful day!
